Is it Piano or Keyboard?

How do I know which is which? Which instrument is the best?

In the world of music, pianos, and keyboards are often used interchangeably, leading to a misconception that these two instruments are one and the same. Imagine learning to ride a bicycle, and then getting on a tricycle - it's similar! While they share some similarities, they are distinct instruments with unique characteristics that set them apart. This article aims to unravel the differences between pianos and keyboards, dispelling the notion that they are synonymous.

Lesson Delivery

One of the major differences between learning piano and keyboard is the approach to the lessons. Learning piano will require the students to read from a complete grand staff for both right and left hand whereas for keyboard, you will only start reading from the Treble staff while the left hand will have Letter Chords.

How Many Keys Are There?

A standard piano has 88 (7 Octaves) keys while a standard keyboard has a standard 61 keys (5 Octaves). The keys on a keyboard are set up just like the keys on a piano. So, if you learn to play a song on a piano, you can play the same song on a keyboard without any problems. They're like cousins that way! However, if you are playing a piano piece, it's important to note that there might be limitations on playing specific pieces due to fewer keys on the keyboard.

How the Keys Feel

When you press the keys on a piano or a keyboard, it's like pushing buttons. Pianos feel a bit heavy when you press the keys, while keyboards can be lighter. Some keyboards have keys that feel heavy too, and those are great if you like the piano's heavy feel. But overall, keyboards are lightweight, wherein piano keys are harder to press.

How Much Does It Cost?

Generally, keyboards are more economical than pianos. The cost of a piano can vary depending on factors like manufacturer, materials, and design, with second-hand options often being more affordable. For keyboards, models can usually be acquired for less, though certain feature-rich models may command a higher price. This affordability aspect might prompt some parents to consider piano or keyboard rentals until their child's commitment solidifies. Check out keyboard prices in the UAE through their links!

Casio Keyboard - CTS200 - I'd recommend this one to beginner piano students as the keys are semi-weighted. It's an affordable start-up practice instrument. Yamaha Keyboard - E373 - This is a good start-up instrument for keyboard students as settings and display are pretty straightforward and user-friendly. There are cheaper options such as Yamaha F-51 and Yamaha E-273 but with the 200 to 300 AED difference, I could say that E373 is a very good keyboard to start with.

PSR - E73 - If you are a student who aims for a Trinity College London Keyboard Exam and is willing to spend a little extra for the long run, this keyboard is the perfect one. This keyboard is aligned with the TLC syllabus and can support the exam requirements from Initial up to Grade 5.

Sound: Acoustic versus Electronic

The sonic possibilities of pianos and keyboards diverge significantly. Pianos generate sound acoustically, while keyboards, being electronic devices, offer a broad spectrum of sound options, encompassing piano tones, horns, strings, organs, synthesizers, and more. Piano lessons often focus on classical music. With keyboards, we explore all kinds of music, from classical to modern and everything in between. You can make a whole band with just a single keyboard!

Size and Portability: Bulk and Mobility

Pianos, noted for their size and weight, are designed primarily for stationary use and often necessitate professional movers. Conversely, keyboards exhibit lightness and portability, making them ideal for traveling musicians and situations where mobility is key.

Maintenance: Sustaining Instrument Health

Maintenance practices encompass regular cleaning for both pianos and keyboards. However, pianos require additional attention, including regular tuning. Due to their acoustic nature, pianos are susceptible to tuning fluctuations caused by factors like temperature and humidity. Keeping a piano in tune often requires professional assistance, leading to potential maintenance costs.

Understanding the nuanced distinctions between pianos and keyboards empowers musicians to make informed choices in line with their artistic goals. The shared concepts between these instruments facilitate a seamless transition, allowing players to harness the diverse expressive potential that both the piano and keyboard offer. Whether delivering an emotive piano piece or engaging in dynamic keyboard performance, embracing these instruments' unique attributes enhances musical versatility and creativity.

To Sum it up:

To sum it up, learning piano often leans towards classical and traditional music, whereas the keyboard encourages the exploration of various musical genres and contemporary styles due to the keyboard's adaptability. In both cases, the fundamental principles of music theory, rhythm, and notation remain important components of teaching. However, understanding these differences helps educators tailor their approach to suit the instrument's unique characteristics and the student's learning goals. Good luck!
